In the United States, the population of older adults age 65 and older was 49.2 million in 2016. This represented about 15.2% of the population (Administration on Aging, Administration for Community Living, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2018). In 2016, Michigan ranked 18th out of the 50 states in percentage of residents age 65 and older (“QuickFacts Michigan”, 2016). As of 2017, Michigan has about 2.5 million adults aged 60 years and older. These adults are 23.6% of the state’s total population.The older adult population group is projected to increase by 50,000 people each year (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging & Adult Services Agency, 2018).

Medicare A
​​​
Covers most care received in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and at home. Most people age 65 and older are automatically eligible for Medicare A. Before the age of 65 a person can be elegible if he or she has a disbiality, end-stage renal disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (eHealth Medicare, 2019).
Elderly Abuse
Intentional actions to a vulnerable older adult that cause harm or create a serious risk of harm, whether or not the harm is intended. (National Research Council, 2003, p.40)
Medicare B
​​
Covers medical services and supplies that are medically necessary to treat a health condition including outpatient care, preventative services, ambulance services, and durable medical equipment. It also covers part-time or intermittenet home health and rehabilitiative services if they are ordered by a doctor to a your condition. Must be 65 year or older, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of five years (eHealth Medicare, 2019).
Older Adults
Persons aged at least 65 years. This is not universal, although a person aged 55, 60, 62 or 65 can qualify for different “senior” benefits (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging & Adult Services Agency, 2018)
Skilled Nursing Facility
A healthcare institution that has at least one full-time registered nurse and doctor, This facility provides nursing care 24 hours a day, and stores and dispenses medication (Seniorliving.org, 2019)
