Housing Options
According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging & Adult Services Agency (2018), about 82% of older adults live in their own home. 46% live with a spouse, 41 % live alone, 10% live with other relatives, and about 3% live with non-relatives.
Michigan provides older adults with many housing options. Independent living or assisted living are most common to hear about for older adult housing options. However, housing options can also include co-housing, retirement communities, skilled nursing facilities, and adult day care programs.

Independent Living/Retirement Communities
The average monthly cost is $1,000-$2,000. Healthy individuals live on their own. This can include housing options such as houses, condos, townhouses, mobile homes, or motor homes. All of these are available for rent or own. This usually includes a population of 55 years and older (Seniorlivingorg, 2019).

Co-Housing
The average mortgage price can range from $100,000-$250,000 plus. Residents ages 55 years and older collectively own land and a building together. Cooperatively the residents own and operate their home (Seniorlivingorg, 2019).

Senior Apartments
The average cost greatly varies on place. This is designed to help older adults, usually ages 55 years and older to accommodate needs like housekeeping, dining, or access to the building (Seniorlivingorg, 2019).

Assisted Living
The average monthly cost is $3,250, which is cheaper than the U.S. average cost of $3,600. Michigan requires an initial evaluation and plan of care within assisted living (Assistedlivingfacilitiesorg, 2019).

Skilled Nursing Facilities
The average cost is about $3,00 a month. These facilities provide 24-hour safety monitoring, daily assistance, and advanced on-site medical care. Individuals can receive therapy services in skilled nursing facilities (Seniorlivingorg, 2019).

Adult Foster Care
The average daily price ranges from $25-$100. This is a facility for individuals who can be taken cared for on a daily basis. This includes a wide range of needs like medical services, cognitive stimulation, social interaction, educational activities, meals, and transportation to and from the facility (Seniorlivingorg, 2019).
