Sociopolitical Considerations

The Older Americans Act provides funding to older and vulnerable residents. This funding is under federal act, and gives each state funds according to their population of people ages 60 years and older. Michigan ranks 8th among the nation’s 56 states to receive funding (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging & Adult Services Agency, 2018).

Michigan legislature allocates general state funding for aging services. In 2018, Michigan’s state funding increased by $3.6 million specifically for in-home and nutrition services. These are pivotal to allow older adults to age in place (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging & Adult Services Agency, 2018).

The Michigan Medicare & Medicaid Assistance Program is also known as the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). This program works through agencies on aging to help Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. They help these beneficiaries to make informed health benefit decisions. The program is supported by a network statewide of unpaid and paid skilled professionals trained to provide free, objective, and confidential information (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Aging & Adult Services Agency, 2018).
