Caring for Older Adults

The United States healthcare system is not prepared for the number of older adults who will need accessible housing in the near future. The baby boomers have the potential to generate a 50% increase of older adults requiring nursing home care by 2030 (Mather, Scommegna & Kilduff, 2019). The Population Reference Bureau (2019) estimates that the number of older adults will nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million in 2060. With the steep rise in the number of older adults being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the demand of elder care has greatly increased and will continue to do so. Similarly, many older adults are forced to age in place “because disproportionate shares of young individuals have moved elsewhere.” (Mather, Scommegna & Kilduff, 2019).
