Generational Beliefs

Majority of older adults are known to be in the Silent Generation/ The Greatest Generation, or in the Baby Boomer Generation. Both have been known to possess certain characteristics related to their generations and experiences.

The Silent Generation

The silent generation includes individuals born between the years of 1925-1942. During most of this era, the U.S. went into an economic crisis called the Great Depression due to complications from World War II. Many people during this time lost many of their possessions and homes. It was at this point, people lost wealth and social classes blended together. (Williams, 2018))  People of this generation are known to have characteristics such as dedication, sacrifice, hard work, duty before pleasure, conservative, past-oriented, and conformist (Clegorn, n.d.)

The Baby Boomers

Baby boomers are known as individuals born between the years of 1946-1964. Baby boomers grew up in a period of time that was after World War II. During this time, the U.S. faced riots including the Civil Rights Movements, Vietnam protests, and multiple assassinations. The U.S. became financially prosperous, and socialization between people also increased during this era (Seniorliving.org, 2019). This was the time for maximizing a lifestyle by engaging in work and buying objects, like houses. These individuals can be described as optimistic, soul searchers, driven, teamwork oriented, invested in personal gratification, and growth of a love/hate relationship with authority (Cleghorn, n.d.).
